Obituary of Joseph John Mager

Joseph John Mager age 88, died peacefully surrounded by family at the Batavia VA Veterans Home on February 8th, 2018. Born June 15, 1929 in Batavia to Stanley and Ann Mager he was the youngest of three boys. He graduated from Batavia High in 1947 and while there played on the Football team. Joe served in the Army during the Korean War and was stationed in Yokohama Japan where he served as Sargent of Arms and was also involved in running the Far East Command Post Office. He has fond memories of his time in Japan and the people he met and places he was able to see. Upon return to the states he started his own business as a custom home builder. All the homes he built here in Batavia are still standing and he always took great pride in pointing them out to his grandchildren during visits. On July 22nd, 1961 he married the love of his life Rosalie Giordano and they have enjoyed 56 years of wedded bliss. They have lived in several homes within Batavia all of which he built with his own hands. He was a true craftsman and produced exceptional work. Upon retirement he spent countless hours enjoying wood working projects making amazing furniture pieces, playhouses, dollhouses, and toys of every imaginable variety for his beloved grandchildren. He loved visiting his Son's family in Massachusetts during retirement, spending time with his grandchildren, and touring all thru New England during every season. Joseph and Rose were long time members of St Joe's Parish and enjoyed attending many social functions, dances and events tied to the church and the surrounding community. Joe was a great dancer and fun to watch on the floor. They were blessed to have so many close family and friends with whom they spent so much of their time. Joe particularly enjoyed hosting large family gatherings for Thanksgiving at their home. Survivors include his wife Rosalie of Batavia, Son Paul and his wife Ellen of Marlborough, MA, Grandchildren Rachel and Kyle Mager. As well as loving Nieces and Nephews in Rochester and Batavia that have given so freely of their time to help care for Joe and Rose over the years and to whom words alone cannot express enough gratitude. Joseph was preceded in death by his older brothers Leo and Hank Mager. Joe's wish was to be cremated, a private service was held for immediate family to say their final goodbyes. Well-wishers are welcome to contact Rosalie thru phone or mail with their condolences. We take great solace in knowing he is now resting in peace after a long, loving, and fruitful life blessed by family and friends.
