Obituary of William E. Benedict

 

Batavia - William E. Benedict, Sr., 89, of Batavia, passed away on Wednesday, August 29, 2018 at Rochester General Hospital.

 

Mr. Benedict was born November 20, 1928 in Phoenix, Arizona, a son of the late Lucien Benedict and Marion Gillette Benedict.

 

Mr. Benedict retired as a lieutenant from the City of Batavia Fire Department after 25 years of service. He also worked as an orderly at the former St. Jerome Hospital for 20 years. He proudly served his country with the United States Marine Corps as a staff sergeant during the Korean War.

 

His loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Marguerite Davis Benedict, passed away on April 4, 2007. Following her passing, he moved back to Batavia to be with his family.

 

A member of St. Joseph's Church and the American Legion, he enjoyed woodworking, building birdhouses, furniture and even a boat. Following retirement, he along with his late wife Marguerite, moved to Williston, North Carolina where he raised ducks, chickens and other small animals on their land. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and being outdoors.

 

He is survived by his son, William E. (Karen) Benedict, Jr. of Batavia, and their family, Justin (Megan) Benedict of Batavia and their son, Jackson, Eric (Leslie) Benedict of Rochester, and their children, Guiliana and Mason; son, Wayne (Alice Ann) Benedict of Batavia and their family, Brian (fiancée Anne Wickstrom) Benedict of Batavia, Tom (Martina) Benedict of Batavia and their family, Margaret and Parker of Batavia and Emily Benedict of Los Angeles, California; son, Jeff (Barbara) Benedict of Rochester, his brother-in-law, A.C. (Kandice) Davis of Gloucester, North Carolina; his close friend, Betty Weatherbee of Batavia, several nieces and nephews including a beloved niece Lynn (Mark) Houle of Williston, North Carolina.

 

He is predeceased by his siblings, John, Benjamin, Ralph, James and Mary Benedict and brothers-in-law, Donnie Gray Davis, Lambert Davis and his sister-in-law, Peggy Parker.

 

Friends may call on Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Bohm-Calarco-Smith Funeral Home, 308 East Main Street, Batavia. His Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 303 East Main Street, Batavia. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Crossroads House, P.O. Box 403, Batavia, New York 14021.
