My Grandpa is one of a kind. He was quick witted and would do anything for his family. No matter what was going on Grandpa always had time for me. Some of my earliest memories are sitting in the backroom at Grandma and Grandpa’s watching a ball game sitting on Grandpa’s lap. Grandma would make us the most buttery-est, saltiest popcorn, and homemade pizza. It was delicious. Those are some of my best childhood memories. I would ask questions about what penalties were, what random calls meant and he would take the time to explain everything, even if it interrupted his game.
I drove for the first time with my Grandpa, after he took me to get my permit, he sat in the passenger seat saying, “This doesn’t feel like 55.” Alright, maybe it wasn’t, but I was 16 and had just gained some freedom. When I first started dating my husband, I told him he had to meet my Grandparents, he seemed to expect it because apparently, I talked about Grandpa a bit. Within the first week of dating Chris, he had met Grandpa. It seemed like they got along. Fast forward a few years and they were euchre partners down at the fire hall. I appreciate how much Grandpa and Grandma accepted Chris and welcomed him to the family.
Family was something that Grandpa valued above all else. Well, I should say he valued Grandma above all else, but I’m sure the rest of us were up there too. Grandma and Grandpa were made for each other. One Thanksgiving Grandma had us go around and say what we were thankful for. Grandma started, she said something along the lines of God and family, then she told Grandpa to go. He said, “You,” Grandma said, “I just went.” Grandpa said, “No, I’m thankful for you.” And they laughed and kissed and that was just how they were. Laughing and smiling and loving. I’ve never met another couple like them.
Another thing Grandpa is known for is his carpentry. I can’t think of a place that doesn’t have something Grandpa put his handiwork into. My parents house has wood flooring that Grandpa and Uncle Jack laid. We still have the rocking horse from when Melanie and I were little. There are countless shelves and cabinets and clocks that Grandpa has made. I can’t smell sawdust without thinking of Grandpa’s shed where he worked on his projects. “I cut it twice and it's still too short!”
I can’t say something about Grandpa without mentioning his temper. It really is a family trait. My dad and sister got a heavy dose of temper from him. I’m positive I didn’t get any at all. He had an opinion on everything and he wasn’t afraid to let it be known.
He had many sayings that will stick with me. I remember him saying on many occasions, “Everything’s for sale, except for Grandma.” Nine naughty nose pickers. The way he would hum while yawning. So much of him lives on in his family, in gestures and sayings. I see him in the gestures of my baby, the mannerisms of my sister, and I see him in the love that Grandma constantly exudes. I myself would not be who I am today without my grandfather’s influence.
There is so much more I haven’t even touched on. He wanted to be an accountant, but he took a job and supported his family instead. He was in the Army Reserves. He was the Treasurer at church, he was on many different boards, and was EMT trained with the firemen. So many different things that made him a remarkable man. But to me he was Grandpa. And I miss him so much.
There is so much more I’d like to share, but I’ll end with this: I recently had a son, when he was born everyone asked how big he was, when was he born. But Grandpa? He asked how I was, he didn’t forget about me in the excitement of the newborn. (Even though he was thrilled with the newborn) I love Grandpa so much. I hope he knows how much; I wish I’d told him so more often. I named my son Leo and if he is half the man my Grandpa was, I will be a proud mama. I love you Grandpa, and just know that we are all taking care of Grandma. She is so strong, because of you.
If you love someone, let them know. Everyday. Tomorrow is guaranteed to no one. Make memories and take pictures. Enjoy them.
I love you Grandpa,
Your Pumpkin, Puddin' Head, Leah

Sandy Weimer posted a condolence
Tuesday, July 28, 2020
Our sincere condolences to Janice, Char, Brian and family. Leo and Russ shared many emergency calls with the Alabama Fire Department back in the day. The Alabama church will certainly miss his handy work. I had a nice chat with Leo and Janice last year at the Oakfield Alumni reunion. May all your yesterdays become sweet memories. Leo will be missed.
Russ and Sandy Weimer
